For the second column is this new series about golf, I’m going to explain why golf is like eating and food. It was easy to compare golf to sex and it is equally easy to show its relation to food and eating.
Given that this is still a new column series, I don’t feel any obligation to stick to a particular format so for this one, I’m going to present a famous food quote followed by how it relates to golf:
“My doctor told me I had to stop throwing intimate dinners for four unless there are three other people” ~ Orson Welles – Well, isn’t it convenient that Orson’s doctor chose the number four, given that golf is a game of foursomes?
“The only time to eat diet food is while you’re waiting for the steak to cook”
~ Julia Child – The many wonders of golf include those incredible golfers who most certainly don’t look in shape. So, it’s clear golf and food indulgence goes hand-in-hand.
“The secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside” ~ Mark Twain – Ahh, if ever there was a perfect golf quote, this might be it since the biggest challenge for every golfer is INSIDE.
“There is no sincerer love than the love of food” ~ George Bernard Shaw – Golfers would probably argue with Mr. Shaw and say that golf is the more sincere measurement of love…or at least obsession!
“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well” ~ Virginia Woolf – Try and hang with a golfer after a bad round of golf. Got it?
“I cook with wine. Sometimes I even add it to the food” ~ W.C. Fields – Every golfer knows that a beer on the back nine and a second as we head into the final three is a tonic for a poor game.
“He was a bold man that first ate an oyster” ~ Jonathan Swift – Many a bold golfer went for the “the shot” that everyone said was impossible. Think Palmer, Nicklaus, Woods…
“Food is an important part of a balanced diet” ~ Fran Lebowitz – Golf is an important part of a balanced exercise program.
“Life is a combination of magic and pasta” ~ Federico Fellini – Mr. Fellini may have been a great filmmaker but he did leave out the third element in the essences of life: golf!
“A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand” ~ Barbara Johnson – And, a balanced golf game is back-to-back birdies!
“The way you cut your meat reflects the way you live” ~ Confucious – And your golf game and its consistency reflects the person you really are.
“Worthless people live only to eat and drink; people of worth eat and drink only to live” ~ Socrates – A few centuries prior to Mr. Fellini’s quote, this great philosopher left out that other ingredient necessary to make life worthwhile – golf – but we’ll forgive Socrates since the game probably hadn’t been invented yet.
