Recently, I wrote a column that apparently angered some readers as well as a dear friend of mine. Upon reflection, I realized that I probably have diarrhea of the mouth (or pen) and, sort of like Tourette syndrome I sometimes don’t censor my thoughts very well. I’ve since deleted that column. So, as a sort of penance and caution to others, I’m writing this column to encourage THINKING before speaking whatever comes to your mind, or hitting “publish” without careful reflection.

Sleepovers
When I was a kid, I did “sleepovers” at my friend’s houses. By the time I was double-digit age, it was no longer “cool” and it stopped. Today’s kids start sleepovers early and, apparently, they never end. Today, there are sleepovers of groups of high-schoolers, and sleepovers of boy/girl couples IN one of their parents’ homes. HELLO?
Can You Be #Friends with Someone Whose #Politics are Diametrically Opposed to Yours?
Yes, I know most people would answer this “Moral Question of the Week” with a quick, “Of course.” But, to me, it’s not so simple. To me, the future of my kids’ lives are at stake with what is going on in the world today. Therefore, the politics of our times – both domestically and internationally – make a huge difference in my day-to-day life and thinking. I’ve found that reasonable “dialogue” with people with opposing views is hard and often ends up in someone being angry. So, with “old” friends on the opposite spectrum, we’ve agreed to simply not talk politics.

Friends
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see or hear the word, “Friends?” For my younger son it would undoubtedly be the TV-series that aired for a decade on NBC, because he loves it so. For others, it might be that Bette Midler song. Maybe it would be something from Sesame Street? Friends enrich our lives. And, like that famous saying, “We don’t choose our family, but we do choose our friends,” we actually have some control over who is our friend.
