IRL is one of those acronyms we all use – In Real Life. What an odd notion in today’s mobile, smart-phone, DIS-connected world when so many of us rely on our tech vs. our personality. Is this best for us? Is this best for OUR KIDS? We have special co-host Tamara McCleary this Thursday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET, to help us navigate real life. Do your kids play with friends outside? Do your teens actually use their phones to talk or just text (as my younger son does)? We all think or speak about wanting to “Start over” with dreams of what we might do differently if we could. Whenever I declare such a thing, I am clear that I’d like to start over with the knowledge I’ve learned living as long as I have. Sort of an oxymoron, I suppose.

Anyone who has a family member or friend in AA has heard of The Serenity Prayer. You don’t have to be part of AA to either agree with it (or not). It says, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” This week’s Moral Question is: Do you believe (in it)? Or do you believe we have more control than the prayer implies?

I recently had the privilege of attending the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Vitamin Angels. It was a gloriously fun event held at the beautiful Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, California.

The event was a gathering of sponsors, donors, and others who have supported and worked with/for Vitamin Angels over the years. It included a terrifically fun golf tournament, lovely swag gifts from the sponsors, and a beautiful outdoor dinner with entertainment and short powerful speeches, accompanied by compelling video.

Do You Really Know Your Kids?

I used to think I knew my boys well. We were especially close after their mother left, when they were six and nine. I was a stay-at-home-dad and involved in everything in their lives when we were married and then after their mother virtually disappeared. For a while, shortly after she left, we all slept together in my bed with both our dogs, too. I was jammed in so I barely could move but it was still very comforting and I treasure that memory. Now, as they’re young adults, I’m wondering if I really know them (at all)?

My #SocialMedia tutor – who started me on this path – is married to a photographer and, as such, has very strong opinions about the use of photographs. In this age of such mass dissemination of information and “sharing” of said info, do you believe you must pay and/or pay attribution for the use of an image on your blog/website? To be more specific, do you believe if your efforts are not blatantly commercial, is it okay to “lift” an image? Please comment below…
