IRL is one of those acronyms we all use – In Real Life. What an odd notion in today’s mobile, smart-phone, DIS-connected world when so many of us rely on our tech vs. our personality. Is this best for us? Is this best for OUR KIDS? We have special co-host Tamara McCleary this Thursday, October 16 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET, to help us navigate real life. Do your kids play with friends outside? Do your teens actually use their phones to talk or just text (as my younger son does)? Do you rely on email or actually “pick up” the phone and call a friend, a colleague, your relatives, OR a business lead? How will this affect our kids’ lives, moving forward?
Starting a New LifeDo You Believe (in The Serenity Prayer)?Anyone who has a family member or friend in AA has heard of The Serenity Prayer. You don’t have to be part of AA to either agree with it (or not). It says, “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” This week’s Moral Question is: Do you believe (in it)? Or do you believe we have more control than the prayer implies? #SocialMedia Social Good – Vitamin AngelsI recently had the privilege of attending the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of Vitamin Angels. It was a gloriously fun event held at the beautiful Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, California. The event was a gathering of sponsors, donors, and others who have supported and worked with/for Vitamin Angels over the years. It included a terrifically fun golf tournament, lovely swag gifts from the sponsors, and a beautiful outdoor dinner with entertainment and short powerful speeches, accompanied by compelling video. Do You Really Know Your Kids?I used to think I knew my boys well. We were especially close after their mother left, when they were six and nine. I was a stay-at-home-dad and involved in everything in their lives when we were married and then after their mother virtually disappeared. For a while, shortly after she left, we all slept together in my bed with both our dogs, too. I was jammed in so I barely could move but it was still very comforting and I treasure that memory. Now, as they’re young adults, I’m wondering if I really know them (at all)? #Kids and #Careers at #DadChat Thursday – PLUS #GiveawaysDid you know that a recent poll found that the majority of parents feared their kids would not do as well as they had? That is an amazing thing! And, I believe a FIRST in modern American history. What are our kid’s best career options? Should EVERY kid go to college? What affect will student loan debt have on our children? Is “trade” school a better option for some? What careers are offering great opportunities and which are declining? Let’s discuss this and more with an EXPERT – Mark S. Babbitt – in this field Thursday, October 9 at 6:00 p.m. PT/9:00 p.m. ET. Mark is generously giving away TWO copies of his book, co-written with Ted Coine, A World Gone Social. Moral Question of The Week – Using #Images/#Photographs With/Without PermissionMy #SocialMedia tutor – who started me on this path – is married to a photographer and, as such, has very strong opinions about the use of photographs. In this age of such mass dissemination of information and “sharing” of said info, do you believe you must pay and/or pay attribution for the use of an image on your blog/website? To be more specific, do you believe if your efforts are not blatantly commercial, is it okay to “lift” an image?
